2nd Oct. 1627 an Inquisition was taken at Wigan (with reference to Prescot grammar school).
James Kenricke gave £300, due from Robert Kenricke, by deed dated 26 Nov. 1597, for the maintenance of a free school and chapel in the parish of Prescot, and decreed that the school should be built in Eccleston, on condition of Edward Eccleston Esq. giving £100 and an acre of land. During 23 years, no progress had been made in carrying out the benefactors intentions, when the school wardens of Prescot sought to have the £300 transferred to their school; and as Henry Eccleston Esq., son of the said Edward Eccleston, refused to confirm his fathers grant of the site, and was willing that the school should be erected in Prescot, the commissioners ordered the school wardens to prosecute John Kenricke of Rainhill, administrator of Christopher Kenricke, brother of the said James, for the £300, for that purpose. A building, now used as a dwelling house, was probably built for a school, in pursuance of this decree.
