Chapter 15: Gods and other minor problems

"I don't believe in ghosts." Erik mumbled. "I'm an engineer, a technican. Why does she always say such things?"

"Because you believe in ghosts." The voice was low and seemed to belong to someone used to authority. However Erik couldn't say whether it was male or female - or even which species it belonged to.

"I don't. And who the hell are you?"

"Don't talk to me like that. I'm your god."

"Which one?"

"Which one? I'm your god." Now he voice sounded slightly confused. Well, it didn't really. It sounded totally confused.

"Ettins have several, there are lot's of Norn gods, the Grendel gods, of course and as far as I know there are also several Shee gods..."

"But, I'm the god."

"If you claim such things you should watch your steps. I don't think the other ones like someone claiming to be 'the god'. But if you were a real god you'd know that, of course..."

"Stop speaking like that, you fool. I'll prove that I'm your god." Suddently Erik was on a hill. First he was blinded but when his eyes adapted to the light he recognized he was standing in the eye of a giant twister. Of course he had never seen one before - not even the Shee build something like that into weather generators of star ships. But as a scientist he knew a lot about physics. And the Ettin schooling system includes such things as building mini tornados, nuclear fusion reactors basic genetic engineering, medicine (most parts of an organism are in fact simple machines - simple for Ettins that is) as well as history and of course theology. So he knew that it was a twister.

"Nice trick. But Gods don't prove their existence. They aren't allowed to do that. It's against the rules." Suddently the darkness came back and Erik heard a noise. The equivalent of something crumbling into dust. "Rain, did you hear that guy?" There was no answer. "Rain? ... Fire? ... Damn." He walked on. After a few steps he was suddently standing inside a light spot.

"Kneel down, mortal."

"Shut up. And get a life. Or come back tomorrow. There are more important things than small talk, you know. And if you need worshipers you should try the Grendels. I'm afraid that's nearly the only thing they are good in. Except of killing their enemies, of course. Or their friends. Or their family. If they'd only kill themselves..."

"But I'm a god..."

"That doesn't make you anything special. There are more gods than Grendels on that ship. And they are many."

"I am special."

"If you insist. And now tell me how to get to the Lower Engineering."

"Why should I do that?"

"Because you're a god. It's your job to do such things."

"Well, I guess it's at the end of the tunnel."

"Fine. And now leave me alone." The light went out and Erik made some more steps forward. He stopped when two green glowing eyes appeared directly in front of him.

"You are no god, are you?"

"No, I'm a Werewolf. A very hungry Werewolf."

"I don't believe in those things." Feeling big teeth cutting deep into his flesh he started to believe in them.
