Chapter 2: Locus

The tunnel ended in a medium sized room with a low ceiling. More tunnels went in different directions. The walls were covered with screens, cables and other stuff that looked like computer components. The light was dim but the air was cool and dry instead of being sultry. Douglas carefully walked into the room. He started to examine the screens.

ET Air humidity 5% Temperature 42°C Light 100%
GT Air humidity 100% Temperature 35°C Light 34%
NT Air humidity 62% Temperature 23°C Light 87%
AT Air humidity 88% Temperature 31°C Light 98%

"Sounds like climate data - but light?" There were more screens showing similar data. But then Douglas found one showing a diagram. It was constantly zooming parts in and out while obviously giving out more detailed data. Douglas knew that diagram.

"Anyone could fake a screen like this." He needed to say that. You see he's that kind of person who only believes what he sees himself. In fact Douglas hardly believes what he sees. He needs evidence. And now he started searching for evidence. Next to the tunnels were signs. 'ENGINEERING... CREW QUARTERS... MAIN CORRIDOR... STORAGE I... BRIDGE - that's it.' He walked through the tunnel. This time the door at the end was closed. And Douglas had no idea how to open it. He searched the door but found nothing - no button, no handle. "That's as good as direct evidence. What could prove it isn't accessible." Douglas turned but while he did something caught his eye. On the left wall was a button - directly below a sign saying PUSH TO OPEN SERVICE DOOR. Douglas pushed it and the door gently slid away.

"The space." The shock of realization hit him - nearly as hard as the blow on the back of his head. Then everything went black.
