Ma G's Saga, part 6 or Norn Delights!
Grace slowly drifted upwards through a fog to awareness. It was as if a thousand grendels were pounding on her skull, trying to get in. What had happen to her? Where was she? She was almost afraid to open her eyes and become awake again.
Open her eyes she did anyhow, not much good though. She was surrounded in darkness. She could smell dampness in the air. Hear the ragged breathing of some poor creature which must have been near by.
She reached out and felt the ground beneath her. It was hard, and smooth. Cold to the touch, she realized she must be in a place built by the Shee. She reached a little futher out and could feel bars coming up out of the floor. She knew then that she was in some kind of cage!
As the daze lifted from her mind she could remember what had happened in what surely could only have been a few hours ago. The wild air bag ride in an attempt to put Karma's egg in a safe place. And then the Shee attack. Somehow they had knocked her out, and now they had her safely locked away.
She had thought they would kill her when they had found her, but they hadn't. Then she remembered what they had said. She wasn't a grendel. Wasn't a grendel? She pondered that for a moment. Sure, she stood tall and straight and had different eyes and hair. But she was the same shade of green as any grendel she had seen. She prefered the trees just like them.
She had always assumed that she was one of them. After all, she knew beyound a doubt that she was not a norn. For some reason she had never though about the differences between her and the grendels. Now that she did think about it she realized that she was as different from them as she were from the norn. Only she had share the same color as the grendel and also some of their habits, she had simply assumed she was one. They had also always treated her as if she was. If she wasn't a grendel or a norn what was she?
Suddenly there was blinding white light. So bright she had to cover her eyes until they adjusted to it. She could see now where she was. Yes, she was in a cage, and that cage in a huge room. It was filled with cages stacked from the floor to the ceiling, all empty except for hers and one across the room. In it was a poor looking creature that looked part norn and part grendel. It had a grendels body and a norn's head. She could see that it was sick which accounted for it's ragged looks and the belabored breathing that she had heard in the darkness.
She could hear footsteps coming from outside, they sounded like they were getting closer. At the other side of the room was a door which suddenly swung open. In walked a group of Shee. Five or six of them, she wasn't sure from here.
They walked to the other cage first. Talking in low voices she couldn't really make out what the were say, She did hear them calling the other creature a gnorn, and then heard them say something about what it was sick from.
Then they turned around and started coming towards her. She would had been frighten if she hadn't already ran out of strenght for that emotion. As they got closer she could see them smiling, and they had little books that some of them were writing in.
They stopped in front of her cage. The one that appeared the oldest looked at her. Then he turned and started to talk to the others.
"This students is something we have not seen in Albia for a hundred generations. This one's a freak, a throwback which should never have been able to happen. We have always believed that our Ancestors work had wiped them all out, and that their genetic expriments had ensured that neither the norn or grendel could produce such a throwback. You are very lucky to see this one! Can any one of you tell us what it is?", the elder Shee said.
The one that appeared the youngest spoke up.
"It's a NORNDELITE!!!!"
Deep in the
fields of corn,
truely there are no norn.
And the music
that played was Mendels,
and still there came no grendels.
