Ma G's Saga, part 3
Ma G started to drift off to sleep. Alpha's last words echoing through her mind. "Rembember you name. Grace." Grace, was she ever called Grace? Grace, Grace, she kept thinking the name over and over. Then slowly she started to remember...
"Grace, come Grace," a high pitched voice called. "Grace, Grace, come," it called again. That voice, so familar, calling her. "Wait, I come," she called back, running towards the temple. As she got closer she could see her friend, it was Karma calling her. Karma, a sweet young norn with upswept purple hair and big blue eyes.
Karma, the only norn that would spend time with her. The other norns ran from her, yelling "Run, Run". They were afraid of her. She always thought it was because of her green skin. She was as green as the grass and they seemed to be afraid of anything different from themselfs. Plus they lived in the city with the Shee, while she lived in the treehouses with the grendels.
While the norns were afraid of her and all the grendels, she was afraid of the Shee. She would never get any closer to their city then the temple. She knew how, but she had heard stories of how they killed the grendels who came to close. The Shee only liked the norns. They pampered them, kept them warm. They took such good care of them that the norn had even forgotten how to find their own food and feed themselves. Yes, she thought, the love the norn, but hated the grendel. She knew if they ever caught her with Karma they would most surely kill her!
She came whenever Karma called anyway. She loved Karma, Karma was her only friend. She had found Karma when she was just a baby. She had somehow manage to wander out of the Shee city and gotten in the lift close to the sub bay. She had gone down to where the deadly mushrooms were and didn't know to push up on the lift yet. Grace had heard crying and had gone to find where it came from. She looked down the lift shaft and had seen the norn baby getting ready to eat some of the mushrooms. She screamed "NO! NO!", down the shaft and pushed the lift button as fast as she could. Down below the baby had looked up and giggled at her.
The lift brought her up to safty and Grace grabbed her out of it. Instead of trying to get away from her, she just grabbed her around the neck and said "bibble, push, bibble". Grace feel in love with the little norn right then. She sat on the ground and put the baby down. She pointed to herself and said "Grace, Grace". The norn looked up at her and said "Grace," right back at her. Then said "Karma, Karma play". Grace was very surprised, norns weren't normally very smart, and took awhile to learn new names or words. Even the grendels were slow learners at this age, plus grendel rarely learned to talk well at all.
Grace played with Karma for a while, then started to lead her back to the temple. As much as she liked this baby she had to try to get it to go back to the city. Before the Shee came looking for her.
Once there she pointed at the city and said "Karma city". "Karma go". Karma looked up at her with her big blue eyes and just said "Grace come". She wanted Grace to go with her, she didn't know of course, didn't know that Grace would never go to the city. Grace just said "no, Karma go to city. Karma run!"
Karma looked up at her with said eyes and turned and walked slowly towards the city. Turning back every few steps to look at Grace again. Grace stood there watching until Karma got to the garden, the she quickly turned and ran so Karma wouldn't see her go.
Suddenly, Grace woke up. It was so real, this dream, but no it wasn't a dream. It was real, it was a memory. This had happened. She had a friend a long, long time ago. A norn, a sweet little norn. She felt warm, and good all over. Karma, Karma was her friend, she had loved her, and cared for her. Karma had loved her also.
She suddenly felt pain in her heart. Not pain like when you ate the wrong thing. No this was different. She realized this pain was because Karma wasn't here with her now. She missed her. How could she ever of forgotten Karma? How? And now that she had remembered her, where was Karma? What had happened to her so long ago. She must remember more! She simply must...
