Shareware

This is a range of free first entries in a longer series or demos of the first levels of longer games.
They all run in DOS, so I recommend using DOSbox if you are going to run them on modern systems.

Some of them have infographics of them on this page

They are arranged by year, oldest at the top, then alphabetically.

> The Adventures of Captain Comic
<

Michael A Demo - 1988

An occasionally infuriating, fun romp this was one of the first platformer games I ever played.

It came out when I was seven. This is the fifth revision of the game, made in 1992.

Jordan Mechner - 1990

A fantastic Persian themed swashbuckling platformer,, the first use of rotoscope I ever experienced.

It led to a series, with the later games being in full 3D with parkour.

> Commander Keen 1: Marooned on Mars <

Apogee - 1990

I loved this series as a kid, I was nine years young when the first one was released as shareware.
It is a platformer in the sci-fi setting of Mars. It is the first of the trilogy Invasion of the Vorticons.
This copy has one of my saves in it, in position 3.

>
Commander Keen: Keen Dreams <

id Software - 1991

This is an experimental game using an earlier version of the engine later used for the 4th, 5th and 6th instalments in the series.

It is a fantastical interquel platformer set in the land of dreams where you play a boy genious called Billy Blaze, who sreads justice across the universe as Commander Keen.

>
D/Generation (demo) <

Robert Cook - Mindscape - 1991

A quirky sci-fi action puzzle set in an advanced technology skyscraper.

Probably the first isometric game I played after Qbert.

Apogee Software - 1991

A gun toting wisecracking  super hero in this 2D platformer first in a well-established series.

> Jumpman Lives!
<

Shamusoft Designs - 1991

This bomb disposal platformer is a remake of the original Jumpman by Randy Glover in 1983.
So please excuse it's old school graphics,
it is very imaginative and often quite difficult.
This copy includes a save file and high score entry from me.

You can play it online here

>
Lemmings (demo) <

Psygnosis - 1991

The classic strategy puzzle game, spawned a popular series.
Inspired lots of copy cat games too. This download is a sample of levels.

I played them an awful lot as an adolescent, especially its popular sequel, Lemmings 2: The Tribes.

After first generation shoot em ups like Space Invaders, games such as Galacta

> Raptor: Call of the Shadow
 <

I have sunk so much time into this game.
It is a shoot em up, with a shop for spending credits on upgrades.
Lots of bullet hell fun.

Free first entry in a larger set of levels. This copy contains some of my save files.

> Electranoid
<

Pixel Painters Corp - 1994

This game is basically a reinvention of Breakout, a paddle and ball game where you must break bricks.

What makes this particular game special is the range of upgrades and brick types.

> Abuse
 <

Crack dot Com - 1996

A run and gun game really blew my socks off as a teen, it is a creepy mission to stop alieneque experiments.

This copy comes with a few of my save files.

> Capture the Flag
 <

Carr Software - 1996

Turn based strategy of the classic outdoor team game.
